Sharing Our Voices At A Special Poetry Competition

In June 2024, we sent a team of talented poetry performers to a special event which was held at Co-op head office in Manchester. There our pupils met children from other Co-op Academies from all over the north of England.

Two of the Year 6 pupils from the trip, Malaika and Umama, told us all about it. They said it was a “really fun experience” and they especially enjoyed meeting the Trust’s CEO Chris Tomlinson, and making friends from Miss Aasim’s other school - Co-op Academy Oakwood.

Before the trip, the pupils practised their poems, finding a quiet time in the playground where they could project their voices. Their Year 6 teacher chose some of the poems for them to recite, and there was also a poem that both Year 6 classes created together. Their poem explained our Ways of Being Co-op:

  • Do what matters most
  • Be yourself, always
  • Show you care
  • Succeed together

Malaika and Umama say that they enjoyed making friends with pupils from the other schools taking part. The event had a really supportive atmosphere. They cheered on Co-op Academy Oakwood who went up to speak before them, helping them to feel confident. When it came to Princeville’s turn, Oakwood and the other schools helped them too. They didn’t feel so nervous when they felt the support from the other schools. Co-operation in action!
