Physical Education

At Co-op Academy Princeville, it is our intention to develop a lifelong love of physical activity. Enjoyment, confidence, self-esteem and team work skills are at the forefront of all lessons.

At Co-op Academy Princeville, we cover the full scope of the National Curriculum. Children receive a high-quality curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. All pupils in Nursery have half an hour of PE timetabled each week. Reception have an hour of PE timetabled each week. KS1 and KS2 have two hours of PE timetabled each week.In the EYFS children have a mix of physical opportunities through timetabled lessons and provision within their learning environment.

There are opportunities to compete (both against themselves and against others)  in a range of increasingly challenging situations, to build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. Children also learn how to lead, evaluate and recognise their own success.Within each lesson, we strive to give every child the opportunity to develop skills in PE, consider the impact on their health and fitness, compete/perform and evaluate. All lessons are carefully differentiated which helps to ensure that learning is as tailored and inclusive as possible.

Children in Year 5 have swimming lessons that are provided by qualified swimming instructors. We support pupils with their swimming ability, aspiring for all pupils to be able to swim at least 25 metres competently, confidently and proficiently. Also being able to perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

Few children undertake in sports and exercises outside of school. Additionally, In Bradford, only 56 per cent of Year 6 pupils were a healthy weight in the 2019/20 school year, with 41 per cent overweight or obese. Therefore in school children are provided with exposure to a wide range of sports and exercises to develop new interests, become involved in different sports, develop fitness, broaden their knowledge and a lifelong love of physical activity.

Children not only learn about different sports, they also develop aspirations linked champions from different backgrounds.
