Statement of Intent
Our curriculum starts with our children, their experiences, and the knowledge they bring to school.
To engage, enthuse and promote a love for learning, you really need to understand your audience, and we know a thing or two about our children!
Our curriculum starts with our children, their experiences, and the knowledge they bring to school; to engage, enthuse and promote a love for learning, you really need to understand your audience, and we know a thing or two about our children!
There are some real areas of strength in our children’s learning and development when they start school. Many of our children:
- live in large families, and have lots of opportunities for socialisation, and play.
- speak two languages, and are fluent in both, interchanging freely.
- are universally curious and excited about learning, and will engage readily with new concepts and ideas.
- Are respectful and eager to meet the expectations of adults, and can therefore engage positively in a school environment.
- have a strong sense of cultural and religious identity, and this leads to curiosity and tolerance.
There are some aspects of learning, knowledge and context that really challenge us:
- Our bilingualism and multilingualism can reduce opportunities to speak and hear English at home, and this in turn can make it difficult to learn about more advanced concepts across the curriculum.
- Some parents don’t speak English confidently, and don’t have a variety of books in the home. This can limit exposure to spoken and written English before and outside school.
- Many children perceive their heritage, culture and religion to be universal, and don’t perceive the multicultural context in the wider UK.
- The housing locally is very dense, and this limits access to good quality outdoor activity and space.
- Unemployment in Bradford is very high, and this means our pupils face greater competition in the workplace, and may not understand or comprehend the breadth of opportunity the world has to offer.

Through the development of language, the determined pursuit of knowledge, and creative and imaginative application of concepts, we hope to foster the aspiration and dispositions necessary to empower our pupils to make a difference in their lives and the life of their community – we hope to affect meaningful change on social justice and social mobility for our pupils.
